The terms and conditions for reading Hot Off The Patent Press and for subscribing to it. Subscribing means you accept these terms and our Privacy Policy.
Last updated 16 August 2026
Hot Off The Patent Press is a free weekly email newsletter about patent filings, operated from New Zealand ("we", "us", "our").
These terms apply to this website and to the newsletter. By using the site or subscribing, you accept them. If you do not accept them, please stop using the site.
We read publicly available patent filings and write about what they suggest, usually one filing per issue, generally weekly. The schedule, format, and length are ours to change.
The newsletter is free. We may introduce paid products in future, and if we do, they will have their own terms.
To have a subscription, you must provide us with a valid email address. When you subscribe you confirm that the email address provided is yours or that you have permission to use it, and that you are at least 16 years old.
Subscribing means you agree to these terms and to our Privacy Policy, and that you consent to receive the newsletter by email.
After you subscribe we may ask a few optional questions about your work. Answering is voluntary and skipping them changes nothing about your subscription.
Every issue carries an unsubscribe link. You can also email us and we will remove you.
Everything we publish is general information for a general audience. It is not legal advice, patent advice, investment advice, or financial advice, and you should not treat it as a recommendation to buy, sell, or hold anything. Sometimes, we may also publish information that can be considered opinion.
A patent filing shows what a company applied to protect. It does not show what a company will build, ship, or succeed at. Our reading of a filing is our opinion and is often speculative, including any commentary on markets, competitors, funding, or what may happen next.
Make your own enquiries and take your own professional advice before you act on anything you read here.
We work from public patent records and other public sources. Those records can be dense, and we can misread them. Funding figures, valuations, and market sizes come from third parties and can be out of date or wrong.
We aim for accuracy and we correct mistakes. If you think an issue is wrong, tell us and we will look at it, correct the archive where a correction is needed, and note the change.
The writing, artwork, and design of the newsletter and this site belong to us, except where we say otherwise.
You may quote a short extract, or share a link, with attribution to Hot Off The Patent Press and a link back to the source. We welcome forwarding our emails on to those who you think may be interested. Republishing a full issue, or using our material in a commercial product, needs our written permission.
Patent documents, patent numbers, and the text of filings are public records and are not ours. Company names, logos, and trademarks belong to their owners and appear here for identification and comment.
You agree not to:
We link to patent records, company sites, news articles, and other third-party pages. We do not control those pages and we are not responsible for their content, their accuracy, or their privacy practices.
We may change, pause, or stop the site or the newsletter at any time. We may also update these terms. When we do, we will change the date at the top of this page, and continuing to use the site or stay subscribed means you accept the updated terms. For any material changes, we will let you know in the next newsletter.
These terms are governed by New Zealand law, and the New Zealand courts have non-exclusive jurisdiction over any dispute about them. This policy applies worldwide, but if you have any concerns for your specific jurisdiction (for example under the EU GDPR), then please reach out to us and we can amend what details we hold for you.
We put care into what we publish, but we cannot promise that the site or the newsletter will always be available, or that everything in them will be correct. To the extent the law allows, we are not liable for any loss you suffer from relying on what we publish, acting on it, or being unable to reach the site, including lost profits, lost opportunities, and any indirect loss.
Questions about these terms can go to charlotte.print123@gmail.com. See also our Privacy Policy.
